지난주 몇가지 좋은 소식들이 있었습니다- 뉴질랜드의 실업률이 4.9%로 하락했으며, 이것은 약 8년 만에 가장 낮은 수치입니다.
대략 3만 5천 개의 새로운 직업이 지난 3개월 동안 창출 되었으며, 지난 한해 동안 14만 4천 명의 더 많은 사람들이 일자리에 투입되었습니다.
이 말은 뉴질랜드가 현재 선진국 중 두번째로 높은 취업율을 가졌다는 뜻입니다. 또한 지난 한해동안 0.2% 오른 물가 상승률과 비교했을 때, 평균 주당 임금은 2% 가량 증가되었습니다.
국민당 정부의 책임감 있는 경제 관리에 감사를 드리며, 이로 인해 우리는 강하고, 성장하는 경제를 가지고 있습니다- 우리는 효율적인 경제를 가진 선진국 중 하나이자, 예산 흑자로 돌아간 몇 안되는 선진국 중 하나입니다.
이것은 지난주 발표된 세계번영지수에서 뉴질랜드가 1위를 차지함으로서 인정받았습니다. 이 평가는 국가의 부를 번영으로 전환시킬 수 있는 우리의 능력을 보여줍니다. 이 평가는 전세계 149개국을 대상으로 경제 및 비지니스 환경이 포함된 8개 분야의 점수를 매겨 순위를 정했습니다.
우리는 또한 보건, 교육, 그리고 법과 질서와 같은 핵심적인 공공 서비스에서 더 나은 결과를 내고 있습니다. 또한 지난주, 우리는 최근 업데이트 된 더 나은 공공 서비스 목표를 발표했습니다.
2012년도에 저는 매년 $70 billion 이상의 혈세를 통해 뉴질랜드 국민들을 위한 더 나은 공공 서비스 결과를 가져다 주기 위해 10가지 도전적인 목표를 세웠습니다.
최근 업데이트된 자료에 의하면 우리는 지역사회 및 가정에 영향을 주는 몇가지 가장 어려운 사안들에 있어서 상당한 진전을 이루고 있으며, 올바른 방향으로 나아가고 있습니다.
더 많은 어린이들이 더 이른 시기에 교육을 시작하며, 더 오래 공부하고, 더 나은 결과를 성취하고 있습니다. 보건 부분에서는 더 많은 어린이들이 면역 주사를 맞고 있으며, 이로 인해 어린이들이 생명을 위협하는 질병에서 보호되며, 류마티스성 열병 환자가 줄어 들었습니다.
수당을 받는 사람들의 숫자도 2014년도 이후 5% 이상 줄어 들었습니다. 범죄율이 지난 발표 이후 증가했지만, 2011년 이후 여전히 15%가 줄어든 수치입니다. 최근 저는 범죄율을 줄이기 위해 경찰 숫자를 늘릴 수 있다고 언급 하였습니다.
이러한 목표들은 모두 우리의 공공 서비스가 더 혁신적이며 진취적이고, 주도적이며 결과에 초점을 맞출 수 있도록 하기 위함입니다.
또한 새로운 것을 시도하기 원하는 정부의 의지를 보여주는 다른 측면이기도 합니다. 이런 목표들은 사회 복지를 향한 정부의 투자적 접근법과 맞으며, 이 말은 정부가 국민들의 삶을 향상시키고, 더 나은 결과를 얻기 위해 조금 더 투자할 의향이 있다는 뜻입니다.
전반적으로 저는 이러한 10가지의 목표 부문에서 이룬 성과들에 만족합니다. 정부가 뉴질랜드 국민들의 삶에 변화를 가져다 주고 있다는 것을 보여주며, 앞으로도 지속적으로 그렇게 할 수 있도록 우린 초점을 맞출 것입니다.
Some great news out last week – New Zealand’s unemployment rate has fallen to 4.9 per cent – that’s the lowest rate in nearly eight years.
Around 35,000 more jobs have been created in the past three months and 144,000 more people are in work over the past year.
That means New Zealand now has the second highest employment rate in the developed world. Average weekly wages are also up nearly 2 per cent in the past year, compared with inflation of just 0.2 per cent.
Thanks to National’s responsible economic management, we have a strong, growing economy – one of the best performing in the developed world – and we’re one of the few developed countries back in budget surplus.
This was recognised last week with news New Zealand had been ranked number one in the world in a global prosperity index. This index cites our ability to turn the country’s wealth into prosperity. It ranked 149 countries across eight different categories, including economic quality and business environment.
We’re also getting better results from core public services like health, education and law and order. Last week, we also released the latest update on our better public services targets.
In 2012, I set out 10 challenging targets for the public service to achieve to get better results for New Zealanders from the more than $70 billion of taxpayers’ money we spend each year.
The latest update shows we’re heading in the right direction and have made significant progress on some of the really difficult issues that affect our communities and families.
More children are starting their education earlier, staying longer, and achieving better results. In health, more children are being immunised, protecting them from many life-threatening illnesses, and cases of rheumatic fever are down.
The number of people on benefits has also dropped more than 5 per cent since 2014. While there’s been an increase in crime since the last update, it’s still down 15 per cent since 2011. Recently I indicated we are likely to increase Police numbers in the near future to help bring this down further.
These targets are all about ensuring the public service is more innovative, enterprising, driven, and focused on results.
It’s another example of this Government’s willingness to try new things. The targets also fit well with our investment approach to social services, which means we’re willing to invest a bit more upfront to improve people’s lives and to get better results.
Overall, I’m pleased with the progress we’ve made in these 10 target areas. It shows we are making a difference to the lives of New Zealanders and we will continue to focus on doing just that.
