작은 국가로서, 우리는 나라 안에서만 물건을 사고 파는 것으로 부유해질 수 없습니다.
그렇기 때문에 저는 뉴질랜드가 유럽 연합(EU)과 함께 무역과 경제 관계에 있어 중요한 발걸음을 내딛은 것을 기쁘게 생각합니다.
이것은 유럽 시장에 더 쉬운 접근을 제공하는 자유무역협정을 향한 중요한 첫 단계이며, 이로 인해 뉴질랜드 국민들과, EU 회사들은 더 쉽게 비지니스 관계를 맺을 수 있을 것입니다.
자유무역협정은 뉴질랜드 수출 업자들이 더 많은 제품과 서비스를 전세계에 팔 수 있도록 지원하는 것이며, 더 나아가 뉴질랜드 국민들에게 강한 경제, 직업 창출, 그리고 더 높은 임금을 제공합니다.
EU는 뉴질랜드의 주요 무역 파트너이며, 쌍방 무역 규모가 $19 billion에 달합니다. 또한 EU의 투자는 우리에게 두 번째로 크며, 우리의 가장 큰 연구 개발 파트너이기도 합니다.
자유무역협정 관계는 국제 시장에 접근을 개선하며, 강한 무역, 투자, 그리고 경제 관계를 통한 경제 다각화를 위한 정부의 큰 계획 중 일부분 입니다.
우리는 EU와 더불어 회원국들과의 협력과, 가능한 한 이른 시일내에 공식적인 협상이 이루어지기를 기대합니다.
EU와의 자유무역협정 협상은 최근 성공적으로 타결 된 환태평양경제동반자협정(TPP)과 한국과의 자유무역협정을 이어갑니다.
TPP는 환태평양 연안 12개국을 포함하고 있으며, 이들은 전세계 경제의 36%를 차지합니다.
지난 해, 뉴질랜드는 TPP에 속해 있는 다른 11개국의 나라들에 $28 billion 상당의 상품과 서비스를 팔았습니다.여기에 속한 8억명의 고객들에 대한 접근을 개선하는 것은 뉴질랜드 기업들에 많은 변화를 가져다 줄 것입니다.
TPP는 적어도 2030년도까지 매년 $2.7 billion의 가치를 뉴질랜드에게 가져다 줄 것으로 예상됩니다.

As a small country, we can’t get rich selling things to ourselves.
That's why I'm pleased New Zealand has taken a significant step towards expanding trade and economic links with the European Union, with a commitment to progress free trade negotiations announced last week.
This is a critical first step towards a Free Trade Agreement that should provide greater access to European markets, and make it easier for Kiwi and EU companies to do business with each another.
Free Trade Agreements enable New Zealand exporters to sell more products and services to the world, creating a stronger economy, with more jobs and higher incomes for New Zealanders.
The EU is a key trading partner for New Zealand, with two-way trade totalling over $19 billion. It is also our second-largest investment source, as well as our largest research and development partner.
Free trade relationships improve access to international markets and are part of the Government’s wider plan to diversify the economy by building strong trade, investment, and economic ties around the world.
We look forward to working with the EU and its member states on next steps and to starting formal negotiations as soon as possible.
This commitment to progress free trade talks with the EU follows the recent successful conclusion of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) negotiations and the signing of the Korean Free Trade Agreement. We have had a Free Trade Agreement with China since 2008.
The TPP involves 12 Asia-Pacific countries, which together account for 36 per cent of the world's economy.
Last year, New Zealand sold $28 billion worth of goods and services to the other 11 countries in the TPP. Improving access to these 800 million customers will make all the difference to Kiwi businesses.
TPP is expected to be worth at least $2.7 billion a year to New Zealand by 2030.
Earlier this week, I returned from an overseas trip to London, Marrakech, and Brussels. While in London I had a private dinner with UK Prime Minister David Cameron and an audience with Her Majesty The Queen.
This was a well-timed visit as this week we welcome Their Royal Highnesses The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall to New Zealand for a week-long visit.
They will be touring the country with visits to Auckland, Wellington, Dunedin, Nelson, Westport, Ngaruawahia, and New Plymouth.
I am sure they will have a great time while they are here, and New Zealanders will make them feel welcome.
