한국 전쟁에서 가장 중요한 전투 중 하나였던 가평 전투에서 뉴질랜드 군인들은 대한민국과 다른 영연방 국가 군병력과 함께 가평전투에서 중요한 역할을 했다. 

이 공로를 인정받아 뉴질랜드 포병 제16포병연대는 대한민국 대통령 표창을 수여받았다. 이 중요한 기념일을 맞아 이상진 주뉴질랜드 대한민국 대사와 필립 터너 주한 뉴질랜드 대사가 메시지를 전했다.

이상진 주뉴질랜드 대한민국 대사는  “한국인과 한국인의 자유, 민주주의를 지키기 위해 청춘을 바친 모든 뉴질랜드 영웅들에게 깊은 존경을 표합니다." 라고 전하였으며,필립 터너 주한 뉴질랜드 대사는  “뉴질랜드와 한국의 양국 관계를 처음 수립한 것은 뉴질랜드 군인들이었습니다. 우리는 그들을 기억할 것입니다. 그리고 대한민국 국민들이 그들을 잊지 않을 것임을 우리는 알고 있습니다.” 라고 메세지를 전했다.

This year marks the 70th anniversary commemoration of the battle of Kapyeong.

The battle of Kapyeong was one of the most important battles during the Korean War. The New Zealand gunners played a vital support role alongside South Korean forces and other Commonwealth countries. For this action, the regiment was awarded a South Korean Presidential Citation.

To commemorate this important anniversary, the Republic of Korea’s Ambassador to New Zealand and New Zealand’s Ambassador to the Republic of Korea delivered  messages to mark the occasion.

From the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to New Zealand, Sang-jin Lee – “I wish to present my deepest respect to all those young New Zealand heroes who dedicated youth to protect Korean people, freedom and democracy.”

From the New Zealand Ambassador to the Republic of Korea, Philip Turner, “It was New Zealand soldiers and sailors who first established the relationship between New Zealand and South Korea. We will remember them, and we know that South Korean people will not forget them. Ka maumahara tonu tātou ki a rātou”
