Preparation Course
A preparation course for future undergraduate students for the University of Auckland BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE course and the University of Otago HEALTH SCIENCE course.
Being accepted into these particular courses is difficult, but not as difficult as successfully moving up the stages leading to graduation. On an annual basis, thousands of students are enrolled into either the University of Auckland, or Otago University. Out of those students that are enrolled, a mere 10% of first years successfully move up into Stage 2; the second year level of their courses.
A successful transition from stage 1 into stage 2 is important because the students’ performance in the first year determines whether they will be able to attend the course that they wish to study in the future. Again, a majority of undergraduate students find this process very difficult. The statistics for students who fail in the later stages are significantly lower than those who are unsuccessful in the first years or their undergraduate life.
The reason as to why this pattern is present is due to the fact that a vast amount of workload is given to a student in a short period of time, making it hard for them to catch up efficiently, leading to their failure in stage 1 (Unsuccessful in ‘moving up’ to the next year).
The most obvious approach would be to study harder during the given university period, but we believe that building a prior understanding and a basis of knowledge before enrolment is a crucial aspect of a successful performance in Stage 1.
