지난주 저는 총리로서 인도에 두번째 출장을 성공적으로 다녀왔습니다.
이번 출장의 목표는 뉴질랜드와 세계에서 세번째로 큰 경제를 가진 국가와의 관계를 강화시키는 것이었습니다. 왜냐하면 저는 뉴질랜드가 얼만큼 열려있고, 전세계적으로 뻗어나가는 지에 따라 우리의 미래가 결정된다고 굳게 믿기 때문입니다.
작은 섬나라 국가로서, 뉴질랜드는 나라 안에서만 물건을 파는 것으로 부유해질 수 없습니다. 그러나 우리가 강하고 지속적인 글로벌 관계를 세우고 발전 시킬 때에 가능해집니다.
제 인도 출장 중에, 저는 뉴델리와 코치 방문하였으며, 나레드라 모디 총리를 만났습니다. 저는 예전 뉴질랜드 크리켓 선수 브렌든 맥컬럼이 포함된 고위급 비지니스 대표단과 함께 동행하였습니다.
뉴질랜드와 인도의 경제 관계는 지난 5년 간 현저히 성장했으며, 쌍방 무역이 3분의 1 가량 증가한 가운데, 우리는 더 할 수 있으며, 더 증가해야 됩니다.
모디 총리와의 미팅 후, 우리는 두 나라간의 고품질 및 포괄적인 양국 자유 무역 협정을 위해 협력하기로 했습니다.
우리는 또한 역내포괄적경제동반자협정(Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership) 회담에서 건설적인 역할을 지속적으로 수행하기로 약속했습니다. 이 협정은 뉴질랜드에게 중요한 무역 및 투자 기회들을 가져다 줄 수 있습니다. 여기엔 한국과 중국, 그리고 뉴질랜드의 10대 무역 파트너 중 4개국를 포함한 16개국이 포함되었습니다.
이번에 다녀온 인도 출장은 긍정적이었으며, 이것은 올해 뉴질랜드의 무역 관계를 강화시키기 위한 정부의 노력에 더해집니다.
올해 초에 저는 중국으로 성공적인 출장을 다녀왔으며, 거기서 중국의 지도자들인 시진핑 주석과 리커창 총리와 함께 뉴질랜드-중국 자유 무역 협정 및 지속적인 진행 사항에 대해 긍정적인 논의를 했습니다.
뉴질랜드와 중국과의 관계는 이전보다 더 넓고 깊어졌습니다. 중국은 우리의 주요 상품 수출지이자 뉴질랜드 서비스 제공의 중요한 소비자이며, 쌍방 무역은 2008년도 후 두배 이상으로 증가되어 대략 $20 billion입니다.
뉴질랜드 통상부 토드 맥클레이 장관 또한 유럽 연합 및 영국의 대표들과의 무역 논의를 위해 유럽에 다녀왔습니다.
뉴질랜드-유럽 연합의 자유 무역 협정은 최우선이며, 영국 또한 뉴질랜드의 주요 무역 파트너입니다. 우리는 이 둘 과의 자유 무역 협정에 관심을 표하였습니다.
또 다른 긍정적인 발전으로는, 지난주 발표된 세계 은행의 보고서에 의하면 뉴질랜드가 세계에서 가장 사업하기 좋은 나라 1위로 등극했습니다.
이 보고서는 일년간 190개국을 조사하여 각 정부의 규제 및 기업을 위한 정부의 영향력을 측정합니다. 뉴질랜드는 지난 2년 간 싱가폴 다음으로 2위에 올라었으며, 1위에 오른 것은 이번이 처음입니다.
최근 나타낸 발전 사항들은 국민당 정부가 더 강하고, 더 부유한 뉴질랜드를 세우기 위해 헌신하고 있음을 보여주며, 정부는 앞으로도 그렇게 할 것입니다.
Last week I returned from my second successful trip as Prime Minister to India.
The aim of the trip was to boost New Zealand’s ties with the world’s third-largest economy. That’s because I believe strongly that New Zealand’s future lies in being open and connected to the rest of the world.
As a small island nation, New Zealand can’t get rich selling things to itself. But it can if we build and develop strong and enduring global relationships.
During my trip to India, I visited New Delhi and Kochi and met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. I was accompanied by a high-level business delegation, including former New Zealand cricketer Brendan McCullum.
Our economic relationship with India has grown significantly in the past five years, with two-way trade increasing by a third, but we can and should do more.
Following my meeting with Prime Minister Modi, we both agreed to work towards a high-quality and comprehensive bilateral free trade agreement between our two countries.
We also pledged to continue to play constructive roles in the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership talks. This deal could have significant trade and investment opportunities for New Zealand. It involves 16 countries, including China and Korea and four of New Zealand’s other top 10 trading partners.
This positive trip to India adds to the good work that we’ve done this year to continue boosting New Zealand’s trading relationships.
Earlier this year I had a successful trip to China, where I had positive discussions with China’s leaders President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang on upgrading the New Zealand-China free trade agreement and work continues on progressing that.
New Zealand’s relationship with China is broader and deeper than ever before. China is a key destination for our goods exports and an important consumer of New Zealand services, with two-way trade more than doubling since 2008 to around $20 billion.
New Zealand Trade Minister Todd McClay was also recently in Europe for trade discussions with representatives from the European Union and the United Kingdom.
The EU-New Zealand free trade agreement is a priority, and the United Kingdom is a major trading partner for New Zealand and we have signalled our interest in a free trade agreement with both of them.
In another positive development, it was great to see New Zealand ranked the top country in the world for doing business in a World Bank report last week.
The report is an annual study that measures government regulations and their effect on business across 190 countries. This is the first time New Zealand has been ranked at the top after finishing second to Singapore the past two years.
The latest developments all demonstrate the National-led Government’s commitment to building a stronger, more prosperous New Zealand and we will continue to do that.
