제가 정치에 입문한 이유는 뉴질랜드 국민들에게 더 나은 삶을 제공하기 위해서 였습니다. 그리고 이 부분은 총리의 역할을 감당하고 있는 제 원동력이기도 합니다.   

국민당 정부는 뉴질랜드 국민들의 더 나은 삶을 위해 도로 개선 및 더 많은 숫자의 주택, 학교, 교실 또는 병원, 그리고 더 많은 사람들이 광대역에 접속할 수 있도록 매일 최선을 다해 일하고 있습니다. 향후 4년 간 저희는 뉴질랜드의 미래를 보장하고, 성장에 대응하며, 보다 나은 뉴질랜드를 세우기 위해 $32.5 billion를 투자할 것입니다. 

이 부분의 실제적인 예로는 오클랜드의 워터뷰 터널입니다. 현재 워터뷰 터널은 정식적으로 차량 통행을 위해 개통했으며, 이 터널은 1959년 도에 개통 된 하버 브릿지 이후 오클랜드의 교통 흐름을 바꿀 수 있는 큰 역할을 할 것입니다. 

워터뷰 터널은 $2.4 billion이 투자된 서부 순환 도로(Western Ring Route)의 마지막 경로이며, 정부의 7개의 국가 주요 도로 중 하나입니다. 이 도로는 48km의 고속도로이며, 오클랜드 하버 브릿지와 1번 국도 도심구간을 이용하지 않고도 오클랜드 공항을 오고 갈 수 있습니다.  

터널로 인해 $430 million의 경제적 효과와, 생산성 향상 및 단축된 이동시간을 통해 1만 8천 개 이상의 일자리가 창출될 것으로 예상 됩니다. 

서부 순환 도로는 성장하는 경제를 지원하기 위해 정부가 전국적으로 투자하고 있는 여러 교통 기반 시설 프로젝트들 중 하나에 불과합니다. 

예를 들어, 정부는 와이카토 고속도로의 헌틀리와 해밀턴 구간과, 크라이스트처치 지역과 크라이스트처치 시내로 들어서는 도로를 위해 투자했습니다.  

또한 올해 초, 저희는 $630 million이 투자 된 맥캐이스부터 페카 페카까지 연결된 고속도로를 개방했습니다- 이 도로는 예정보다 4개월 더 빨리 진행되었습니다. 지난주에는 사이먼 브리지스 교통부 장관이 페카 페카부터 오타키까지 연결되는 고속도로의 착공식을 개최했습니다. 

성장하는 경제의 요구를 만족시키는 또 다른 방법은 주택 문제 해결입니다. 

저희는 현재 역대 최고 수준의 건축 호황을 누리고 있으며, 특히나 최신 통계에 의하면 오클랜드에는 작년 5월 부터 건설 비율이 21% 증가했습니다. 

또한 지난주에 저희는 헛 밸리의 700채 이상의 주택들과, 웰링턴의 145채의 주택 건축 및 재개발을 위한 중대한 프로젝트를 발표 했습니다. 

최근의 이러한 발표들은 주택 증가를 통해 더 많은 가정들이 주택에 거주할 수 있도록, 정부의 주택 프로그램이 실천 가능한 모든 방법들을 동원하고 있다는 것을 보여줍니다.  

그럼에도 불구하고 저희는 여전히 해야 될 일이 많다고 생각합니다- 아직 시작에 불과합니다. 

다음 단계는 수만 채의 새로운 주택들이 더 신속하고, 더 빠르게 건설되는 것을 돕는 $1 billion의 주택 기반 시설 펀드 자금을 할당하는 것입니다. 

저희는 성장하고 있는 뉴질랜드 경제가 성공의 증표라고 생각합니다. 다른 당들이 해결하기 어려운 과제들을 향해 달려가거나, 저희에게 휴식이 필요하다고 말하는 동안, 국민당 정부는 성장의 기회들을 포착하고 있습니다. 저희는 현재까지 이룬 성과를 자랑스럽게 생각하며, 2020년 대로 당당한 뉴질랜드를 이끌어 가길 기대해 봅니다. 

Future proofing New Zealand

Making life better for New Zealanders is why I came into politics, and it’s what drives me as Prime Minister. 

It is what this National-led Government is busy doing every day – whether by building better roads and more houses, more schools, classrooms and hospitals, or connecting more people to ultra-fast broadband. Over the next four years we’ll be investing $32.5 billion to future proof our country, respond to growth, and build a better New Zealand.

A real live example of this is the Waterview Tunnel in Auckland. Now officially open to traffic, it represents the biggest change to Auckland’s transport system since the Harbour Bridge opened in 1959.

It is the final link in the $2.4 billion Western Ring Route – one of the Government’s seven Roads of National Significance. It’s a 48 kilometre motorway alternative to State Highway 1 and the Auckland Harbour Bridge, and will help people get to and from the Auckland Airport.

It is expected to produce wider economic benefits worth $430 million and create more than 18,000 jobs through improved productivity and reduced travel time.

The Western Ring Route is just one of many transport infrastructure projects this Government is investing in right across the country to support a growing economy. 

For example, the Huntly and Hamilton sections of the Waikato Expressway, and the motorways into and around Christchurch. 

And earlier this year we opened the $630 million Mackays to Peka Peka Expressway on the Kapiti Coast - four months ahead of schedule. Just last week, Minister of Transport Simon Bridges turned the sod on the Peka Peka to Otaki Expressway.

Another way we are meeting the needs of our growing economy is in housing. 

We are currently experiencing our biggest ever building boom, particularly in Auckland where latest figures show construction has increased by 21 per cent since last May. 

And just last week, we announced a significant project to build and refurbish over 700 homes in the Hutt Valley, and 145 houses in Wellington. 

These latest announcements show this Government’s housing programme is pulling every available lever to get more houses built so we can get more families into homes.

Of course, there is always more to do – we are just getting started. 

The next stage is to allocate the $1 billion Housing Infrastructure Fund, which will help build tens of thousands of new homes sooner and faster. I should be able to tell you more about this soon.

This economy is growing, and we see it as a mark of success. While other parties reach for the too-hard basket, or say we need a ‘breather’, this National-led Government embraces the opportunities of growth. We are proud of our success and look forward to leading a confident country into the 2020s.
