2020, 'Challenging times' for retailers

China’s coronavirus outbreak has delivered a fast, sharp shock to the New Zealand economy. From tourism to meat trade, the disease has highlighted just how reliant New Zealand has become on China. Already, some economists are saying the virus officially named Covid-19 – and a local drought could tip New Zealand into recession this year.

Consumers budgets are really squeezes, they have got lot of non-negotiable expenses increasing: petrol taxes, council rates, insurance bills, etc, and that has flow-on effects, reducing the amount of discretionary spend people. Moreover, 63 sets of roadworks or public construction projects in Auckland CBD in 2020 are bringing downtown to a standstill.

Rents rose at the fastest pace in more than a decade in 2019, official figures show, amid strong demand and new rules for accommodation.  Rents in Wellington increased 4.5 per cent in 2019, by 1.9 per cent in Auckland and 1.3 per cent in Canterbury. The new rule is the Healthy Homes Standards introduced in July 2019. Some landlords have upgraded their properties tin order to meet the new standards and may have passed on the costs to the tenants.

Combined with increases in petrol prices and airfares, household inflation rose by 0.5 per cent in the quarter, pushing annual inflation to 1.9 per cent, the highest in more than a year.

Also, the minimum wages is set to increase again in April to $18.90 per hour from the current rate of $17.70 per hour. The increase is a step toward to goal of $20 minimum wage by 2021. New Zealand's unemployment rate was low at 4.2 percent, and the economy predicted to add 43,600 jobs in 2020.

Employers, particularly in the retail sector where average net margins are really low, simply can’t afford to pay more. Overall, 2020 is going to be ‘challenging times’ for retailers.
